About

Opportunity for All Kids (OAK) is the statewide advocacy organization in Minnesota focused solely on building grassroots support and advocating for education choice for students. OAK’s mission is to ensure that every child in Minnesota has access to an education that will help them thrive.

Minnesota has a rich history of supporting school choice dating back to the 1950s when the state allowed parents to claim a state income tax deduction for school expenses. In the 1980s, Minnesota ushered in the first-in-the-nation concept of public school choice through open enrollment. In 1991, Minnesota became the first state to offer a charter school option to parents and students. And in 1997, Minnesota expanded the state educational income tax credit and deduction to more Minnesota families. Since the 1990s, Minnesota adopted the nation’s first online learning law and oversaw the expansion of more than 150 charter schools throughout the state.

But Minnesota can do more to provide parents with access to better schools. That’s why OAK is pushing to expand education choice to private schools through tax credits and Education Savings Accounts (ESAs). At the federal level, OAK advocated for the expansion of 529s to include K-12 private school tuition and other related education expenses. We’re pleased to that this initiative was included as a provision in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 and is effective for tax year 2018.
